Preparing Students for the Future: Critical Thinking Training for Teachers

Updated: May 30, 2025

The Klaus Hoffarth Center for Critical Thinking is embarking on a long-term program that aims to train over 800 teachers nationwide on how to integrate critical thinking in their classrooms.

The National Service Training Program (NSTP) plays a crucial role in shaping the civic consciousness and practical skills of Filipino youth. Recognizing the need to equip NSTP teachers with the tools to foster deeper learning, the Klaus Hoffarth Center for Critical Thinking (KHC) will soon launch ThinkED, an innovative teacher training program that aims to empower educators through critical thinking.

The main goal of ThinkEd is to equip educators with essential critical thinking skills and innovative teaching strategies that foster reflective, analytical, and problem-solving abilities, enabling them to create dynamic, inquiry-based learning environments where students thrive as independent thinkers and engaged, reflective citizens. Specifically, it aims to develop eight critical thinking modules for Teacher Education Institutions and train forty National Service Training Program (NSTP) instructors who will implement the critical thinking modules.

NSTP is believed to be the best platform for this teacher training program as it is required of all Filipino students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs and at least two technical-vocational courses in public and private institutions. The NSTP program is designed to instill civic consciousness, patriotism, and community service - all of which are necessary foundations in KHC's advocacy to promote good governance through critical thinking.

Modules in the ThinkEd teacher training program include Reflective Teaching and Learning, Ethical Decision-Making, Critical Media Literacy and Civic Responsibility through Critical Thinking. ThinkED is led by Mr. Ryan Noleal under the supervision of Miriam College's Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Trixie Marie Sison and the guidance of KHC's Advisory Council.
